Cameroon dam opening: FG and states advise residents at risk of flooding to evacuate to avert fatalities
Dam Release Information: The High Commission of Cameroon informed the Federal Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Nigeria that the Lagdo Dam in Cameroon would soon be opened due to heavy rainfall in its catchment region.
The release of water from the Lagdo Dam is anticipated to have an impact on at least 11 states in Nigeria. Adamawa, Taraba, Benue, Nasarawa, Kogi, Anambra, Edo, Delta, Bayelsa, Rivers, and Cross River are some of these states.
Authorities in these states have recommended inhabitants in flood-prone areas to evacuate for their safety in reaction to the anticipated flood threat. This involves razing structures close to waterways and turning schools into internment camps.
State governments and the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) are taking precautions against probable floods. This entails keeping an eye on riverbanks and waterways, warning locals about the dangers, and designating safe areas for occupants.
Information on the Lagdo Dam’s Water Release: According to officials, the Lagdo Dam will release water, but only when it is absolutely necessary. The River Benue’s many states would be impacted by the water flow.
Nigeria and Cameroon have been in contact regarding the release of the dam, and steps are being taken to lessen any potential effects.
Preparation and Education: State governments have launched education programmes and counselled citizens to take safety measures, including moving to safer places.
Residents of these impacted locations must pay attention to the warnings and take the necessary precautions to guarantee their safety. To minimise the potential effects of this dam discharge and to protect lives and property, cooperation between federal and state authorities is crucial, as is contact with Cameroon.
