CAF President Patrice Motsepe confirms a thorough investigation into the Libya vs Nigeria match controversy, pledging swift action.
Patrice Motsepe, President of the Confederation of African Football (CAF), has taken a firm stance on the inhumane conditions that Nigeria’s Super Eagles recently endured in Libya.
During CAF’s 46th Ordinary General Assembly in Addis Ababa on Tuesday, Motsepe announced that suitable measures will be implemented once the investigation is concluded.
Remember that before their 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifier during the October international break, Super Eagles players and their officials faced harsh treatment in Libya.
The team’s flight to Benghazi was redirected to Al Abraq, a small airport away from Benghazi Airport. The players were held captive there for over 15 hours without food, water, or internet access.
“We must adopt a zero-tolerance stance. Regarding the issue with the Nigerian national team in Libya, I will refrain from commenting as there is an ongoing investigation,” Motesepe stated.
However, I want to stress a principle that we will not accept. This issue has persisted for quite some time.
“Let’s set aside the Libya vs. Nigeria situation for now; rest assured, appropriate action will be taken. I’ve heard numerous accounts regarding football clubs or national teams visiting a country.”
