Prior to the Ebonyi South Senatorial zone election on February 3, former Ebonyi State Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, or PDP, Silas Onu, has won the party’s primary bye-election.
The election to replace former Senate Majority Leader Dave Umahi, who was named Minister of Works by President Bola Tinubu, took place on Monday at the zonal party secretariat in Afikpo in the Afikpo North Local Government Area.

Sen. Amah Nnachi, who received 0 votes in the race, was defeated by Onu with 143 votes overall.
The poll was deemed credible, free, and fair by the PDP Primary bye-election committee, which was chaired by Mr. Lekan Rotimi.
After the vote, Rotimi announced the results and pointed out that the process had adhered to both current election laws and the party’s established principles.
Chief Silas Onu is hereby declared the winner and re-elected as the PDP candidate for the Ebonyi South Senatorial district. He did this by following all applicable electoral laws and the PDP primary election guidelines, as well as by receiving the majority of valid votes.
“One invalid vote was recorded out of the 144 delegates who were accredited to vote in the election,” he stated.
According to Rotimi, representatives of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and other pertinent security agencies, such as the Department of State Security (DSS), Police, Civil Defence, and Army, kept an eye on the election.
Additionally, he denied that there had been any rival primary elections in the zone, stating that his committee was still the only one authorised by the national party office to oversee the election.
He went on, “As I mentioned, I have given you my name and the names of my committee members, and we are the only people sent to conduct the election from Abuja. I’m not aware of any other congress going on anywhere.”
