In a recent ruling at the Jos Magistrates’ Court, a 28-year-old businessman named Peter Sunday was sentenced to one year in prison for the theft of vehicle parts worth N200,000.
The presiding Magistrate, Mr. Shawomi Bokkos, delivered the sentence after Sunday pleaded guilty to the charges brought against him.
Despite the severity of the sentence, Magistrate Bokkos did offer Sunday an alternative.
He provided the option for the convict to pay a fine of N30,000 along with a compensation fee of N100,000 to the complainant involved in the case.
This leniency in sentencing showcased a balance between justice and mercy in the eyes of the law.

Magistrate Bokkos emphasized that the punishment handed down to Sunday was not only to penalize him for his crime but also to deter others from engaging in similar criminal activities.
By setting an example through this case, the court aimed to discourage potential offenders from committing theft or trespassing in the future.
The court proceedings were initiated following a report made by the complainant, Stephen Dung, at the “B” Police station in Bukuru on March 19.
The Prosecutor, Insp Labaran Ahmed, detailed how Sunday had unlawfully entered a mechanic workshop and stolen a gearbox, leading to his subsequent arrest while attempting to sell the stolen item.
The Prosecutor highlighted that the actions of the convict were in violation of the Plateau State Penal Code Law, which outlines the consequences for such criminal behavior.
The case served as a reminder of the legal repercussions individuals face when engaging in theft or similar offenses, reinforcing the importance of upholding the law within the community.
