Seun Kuti, the Grammy-nominated Afrobeat artist, has expressed disappointment over Burna Boy’s incorrect crediting for songs that he and other Nigerian musicians have established.
He mentioned that, despite Kuti’s (2012) appearance at the festival, Burna Boy was reportedly the first performer to perform at Coachella in 2020.
He also highlighted that Burna Boy’s older brother Femi Kuti had received many nominations in the category prior to Burna Boy receiving his first Grammy nomination for Best World Music Album with African Giant.
In a recent interview with The Public Republic, Kuti bemoaned the fact that, despite his record “Black Times” having received a nomination for Best World Music record years prior, no African award organisation had given it any thought.

The contentious singer claimed that the media failed to acknowledge him as one of the Nigerian artists nominated for the 66th Grammy Awards, even though he received another Grammy nomination for his work on Janelle Monae’s “Age of Pleasure,” which was nominated in the 2024 Grammy Awards’ Album of the Year category.
“My brother Femi Kuti has received numerous Grammy nominations. They have nominated me; in the last round, I was also nominated. The only name among the Nigerian musicians nominated for the 66th Grammy Awards that they [the Nigerian media] omitted was mine. They always act like I’m from Togo in this way.
He bemoaned, “They said that Burna Boy was the first Nigerian artist to perform at Coachella in 2020, even though I performed there in 2012 acting like I was from Togo.”
