Bayer Leverkusen took a significant step towards their first-ever Bundesliga title with a victory over 10-man Union Berlin. Florian Wirtz’s successful penalty kick secured their ninth consecutive win, extending their lead over Bayern Munich to a commanding 16 points with only six matches left to play in the season.

Meanwhile, Bayern Munich’s slip-up against mid-table Heidenheim, where they let a 2-0 lead slip to lose 3-2, provided Leverkusen with an additional boost in their title pursuit.

Leverkusen now has the opportunity to clinch the German championship by winning their upcoming home match against Werder Bremen next weekend.

Leverkusen’s coronation as champions seems almost inevitable, as Xabi Alonso’s unbeaten team only requires three points from the remaining 18 available to secure the title.

The club will undoubtedly be eager to seal the deal in front of their own supporters and complete their long-awaited quest for the German crown.

In their recent match against Union Berlin, Leverkusen faced some frustration as Union keeper Frederik Ronnow made several impressive saves.

However, Leverkusen finally broke through in first-half stoppage time after Robin Gosens received a second yellow card for a foul on Nathan Tella.

From the resulting free-kick, Christopher Trimmel handled Piero Hincapie’s shot, leading to a VAR review and ultimately a successful penalty conversion by Wirtz.

Leverkusen’s success this season extends beyond their Bundesliga campaign, as they are also on track for a remarkable treble.

They recently secured a spot in the German Cup final by thrashing Fortuna Dusseldorf 4-0. Additionally, they are preparing for the first leg of the Europa League quarter-final against West Ham, further highlighting their impressive form and ambitions in multiple competitions.
