Former Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari has said that he is now amenable to a political scenario that would result in the release of Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), who is currently jailed.

This was said by Buhari on Saturday when he hosted Obi Aguocha, a representative from Abia State, at his home in Daura, Katsina State.

In Daura, the legislator representing the federal constituencies of Ikwuano, Umuahia North, and South was hoping to get Buhari to back the release of the beleaguered IPOB leader.

Aguocha apologised to the former president on behalf of Kanu for his previous deeds and statements, and he stressed that a political solution may help settle disputes and promote national unity, according to a report by TheCable.

“I sincerely apologise for the errors and regrettable remarks made by my brother and constituent, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu,” Aguocha declared.

In response, Buhari expressed his support for a political resolution that would lead to Kanu’s release while praising Aguocha’s dedication to his citizens.

According to OBASANJONEWS, Buhari has previously opposed a political resolution to Kanu’s problem, arguing that the outcome of ongoing legal proceedings should be used to decide his destiny.

Buhari said in January that Kanu’s extradition to Nigeria for a trial was a “favour,” as the federal government could have had him removed.

during leaving the country during the invasion of his Umuahia residence, Kanu was extradited in 2021. However, according to the Federal Government, he fled to avoid being tried for terrorism, treasonable felony, and incitement.

Since then, the leader of IPOB has stated that he is open to talks with the federal government.

Approximately fifty members of the House of Representatives had earlier on June 23 petitioned President Bola Tinubu to assist in Kanu’s release.

Concerned Federal Lawmakers for Peace and Security in the South-East, as these lawmakers were known, urged Tinubu to give Attorney-General Lateef Fagbemi instructions to use Section 174 of the 1999 Constitution to have Kanu released.
