The President and the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Godwin Emefiele, had a meeting earlier in the day, hours after the Supreme Court postponed the case brought by state governments to challenge the CBN’s naira redesign policy until February 22.

On February 3, the Nigeria Governors’ Forum requested the President to allow all old notes to circulate in the system to lessen the hardship on everyday Nigerians. The President then made a plea to Nigerians asking them to give him seven days to fix the cash crisis. The Supreme Court ruled that the Federal Government, the CBN, and commercial banks must not continue with the deadline pending the resolution of a notice in regard to the issue. The CBN had extended the deadline for the swap of old N200, N500, and N1,000 from January 31 to February 10 in response to complaints from numerous Nigerians.
