Former President Muhammadu Buhari has expressed concern about the uncontrolled population growth in Nigeria, warning that it could pose significant challenges for future generations.
Buhari stressed the importance of raising awareness and engaging in dialogue on this issue during a conversation with journalists after participating in Eid prayers with Emir of Daura, Dr. Faruk Umar Faruk.
In a statement released by his media aide, Buhari acknowledged the positive trend of Nigerians getting involved in agriculture to increase food production and stabilize prices.
However, he emphasized the urgent need to address the unchecked population growth, describing it as a critical concern. Buhari urged all citizens to support local agriculture and strive for self-reliance, especially in the face of rising prices.
He also highlighted the importance of national discussions on population management, as well as increased investments in education and healthcare.
Buhari commended the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) for its role in national unity and development, recognizing it as one of the lasting legacies of former Head of State, General Yakubu Gowon.
As part of his annual tradition, Buhari presented a cow, 10 bags of rice, and financial support to NYSC members to mark the occasion. His remarks emphasized the dual message of agricultural self-sufficiency and responsible population management, aligning with the ongoing national priorities amidst economic challenges.
