To strengthen Nigeria’s bilateral ties with the UK, President Muhammadu Buhari met with His Royal Majesty, King Charles III, on Wednesday at Buckingham Palace.
After meeting the 73-year-old king, Buhari said that King Charles III enquired about his residence in the UK in an interview.
“When King Charles III inquired if I had a home in the UK, I replied that I didn’t. I am a single person living in Nigeria, and the only residences I own are the ones I owned before entering government. I am not interested in owning several properties. I’m much more liberated when I have nothing “a President said.
Regarding the reason for his visit to the respected king, Buhari stated that since Nigeria is a sizable market, it makes sense to foster commercial ties between the two nations.
“First, the meeting with the monarch in Kigali that was scheduled for us to attend was sadly postponed. He expressed a keen interest in Nigeria, adding, “I believe we still have a tremendous connection to them because of their longstanding history with Britain and our economic power.”
During the reign of Queen Elizabeth II, who passed away in September 2022 at the old age of 96, Nigeria, a former colony of Great Britain, won independence on October 1, 1960.
The present ruler, who assumed the throne following the death of his mother, “speaks very well of Nigeria,” according to Buhari, who wishes to maintain and, if possible, strengthen the connection.
The president said: “Let them make sure that the relationship is enhanced instead than let it go down. Most businesspeople, Nigerian and British, want to continue working together.
“No Reversing the Naira Redesign”
The President also stated that the redesign of the N1,000, N500, and N200 banknotes are set in stone and that politicians won’t be permitted to gather resources and thugs to scare voters in the general elections of 2023.
He said that the strategy stated by Godwin Emefiele, the governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), on October 26, 2022, has been adopted permanently.
Buhari stated of the choice to redesign the three naira notes, “There’s no turning back.”
“My goal is to make Nigerians feel as though we respect their government.
“As a result, Nigerians should cast their votes for any candidate from any political party. Nobody would be permitted to gather support and goons to threaten members of any constituency.” I want to be remembered as a leader in Nigeria for that.”
King Charles III wrote to the president of Nigeria to express his sympathy for the disastrous floods that had left millions of people homeless in the West African country and claimed hundreds of lives.
On October 31, Buhari left for London to get a “regular medical check-up.”
The President will visit London for a medical examination once again in 2022. In March and July, Buhari travelled to the UK for medical treatment.
