Gumi highlighted the diversity of Nigeria, with its various ethnicities, religions, cultures, tribes, and sects, and stressed that protest is the only language the government understands.
Gumi also pointed out the shift in the legality of protests, noting that while protests were legal in the past, they are now considered illegal. Despite this, he expressed hope that the government would respond positively to the language of protest, emphasizing the peaceful nature of the planned demonstrations.
The cleric’s call for peaceful protests comes in the wake of activist politician Omoyele Sowore’s call for a revolutionary protest in August to address the country’s hardships, indicating a growing momentum for peaceful demonstrations as a means of effecting change in Nigeria.
