The legal battle over the Ogun State governorship election came to an end on Friday as the Supreme Court dismissed the petition filed by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and its governorship candidate, Oladipupo Adebutu.
The appeal, jointly brought by the PDP and Adebutu, was deemed unmeritorious and subsequently thrown out by Justice Tijani Abubakar in his lead judgment.
The court rejected Adebutu and the PDP’s request for a fresh election in the 99 polling units where the elections were allegedly cancelled, stating that there was no evidence to support these claims.
Instead, the Supreme Court upheld the victory of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and its governorship candidate, Dapo Abiodun, who were lawfully declared winners by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). Justice Abubakar also criticized the documents presented by the appellants, stating that they lacked evidential value due to their lack of proper heading, date, signature, and name of any official.
The court affirmed the decisions of the Ogun State Governorship Election Petitions Tribunal and the Court of Appeal, both of which had previously dismissed the petition for lack of merit.
