President Bola Ahmed Tinubu makes history by appointing the first-ever Deputy Director-General of the Department of State Services (DSS), marking a significant development in Nigeria’s security architecture.

President Bola Tinubu has authorized the appointment of Folashade Adekaiyaoja as the Deputy Director General of the Department of State Services (DSS).

This is the first instance of a Nigerian president making such an appointment, indicating efforts to improve the agency’s operational framework.

The decision, guided by the recommendations of both the DSS Director General and National Security Adviser Mallam Nuhu Ribadu, aligns with the original organizational structure of the Service. Traditionally, this hierarchy includes three Deputy Directors General—a structure that has been reaffirmed through this appointment.

Reports indicate that the appointment is intended to enhance the agency’s efficiency and optimize its leadership for improved coordination.

A source stated, “It aligns with its current regulations and is unprecedented in the history of the Secret Service.”

The appointment of Adekaiyaoja, originally from Kogi State, was celebrated by a diverse group of officers and operatives who regard her as highly qualified for the position.

Additionally, it was reported that President Tinubu, committed to enhancing the security of life and property for Nigerians, instructed the heads of security agencies to develop proposals for improving their service delivery.

“The source stated that the President endorsed the DG’s recommendation, and many current and former officers are confident it will enhance career advancement within the Service.”

At the investiture ceremony for graduates of the National Institute for Security Studies’ Executive Intelligence Management Course 17 last December, Tinubu pledged to equip the DSS and other security agencies with state-of-the-art tools powered by Artificial Intelligence to address insecurity nationwide.

Through the NSA, the president expressed his awareness of current security challenges and urged all security agencies to collaborate for the benefit of Nigerians.

Upon assuming office in late August 2024, Mr. Oluwastosin Ajayi, the Director-General of DSS, pledged comprehensive reforms aimed at transforming the organization into one of the most efficient covert security agencies globally.
