BREAKING: NLC Holds Emergency Meeting After Ajaero’s Arrest
The NLC has called an emergency meeting in response to Ajaero’s arrest, with significant discussions expected on the implications and next steps.
Following the detainment of Joe Ajaero, who is currently serving as President of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), an immediate and confidential gathering has been arranged by the group.
As Ajaero was traveling to the United Kingdom for a global workers’ conference, an incident occurred.
In an interview, Benson Upah, who is the Head of Public Relations at NLC has affirmed that Ajaero was apprehended by Nigerian State agents without any legal warrant or official documentation. At present, his whereabouts and physical condition remain a mystery.

Ajaero’s detention has been deemed a flagrant display of lawlessness and intimidation by the NLC, which is calling for his immediate and unconditional release.
Upah stressed the urgency of Congress’s appeal to global communities, human rights groups and democracy supporters in monitoring Nigeria’s disturbing upsurge towards authoritarianism.
Ajaero had an engagement to speak on behalf of Nigerian laborers at the Trade Union Congress in the UK, which involved tackling crucial subjects like employees’ welfare, equitable economic opportunities and social justice.
Upah stated that the NLC has mobilized its affiliates, state councils and civil society allies to firmly defend workers’ rights and oppose oppressive tactics.
A closed-door meeting of the Congress is underway to consider the situation, and information regarding its result will be made available publicly in due course.
Further information will be provided soon…
