Witnesses described “confrontations,” explosions, and gunshots close to a Rapid Support Forces camp in the south of Khartoum.
After days of conflict between the army and a powerful paramilitary organisation, loud gunshots and explosions could be heard in Khartoum, the capital of Sudan.
On Saturday, there were shootings and explosions close to the Sudanese army’s headquarters, the defence ministry, the presidential palace, and the airport in central Khartoum.
Soldiers were stationed on the streets, and columns of smoke were coming from various locations across the city. After artillery engagements shook the city, people were spotted scurrying for shelter.
Witnesses reported hearing loud explosions, shooting, and “confrontations” close to a paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) facility in south Khartoum.
According to a statement from the Rapid Support Forces, they were taken by surprise when a sizable army force unexpectedly entered camps near Soba, Khartoum, and besieged paramilitaries there.
It said that the army “launched an all-out assault with various heavy and small weaponry.”
A spokesperson for the Sudanese army, however, said paramilitary forces had targeted military installations.
Brigadier-General Nabil Abdallah said that “fighters from the Rapid Support Forces stormed various army bases in Khartoum and elsewhere in Sudan.”
Despite continued fighting, the army is doing its part to protect the nation.
