The building collapse was confirmed by Ibrahim Farinloye, the Territorial Head of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) in Lagos, who also stated that rescue efforts were still underway.

“A two-story building with a pent house along Herbert Marculley way, Ebute Metta, collapsed at about 09:30,” he stated. It is believed that a woman who was occupying it illegally got trapped, but no one has been able to corroborate that. It is also believed that there may have been two other individuals present.

All of the initial occupants had left their cars after multiple evacuation notices from the Lagos Building Control Agency (LASBCA) were issued. The property was said to have been sold approximately four months prior.

With the help of the neighbours, three of the passengers leaped to safety. There is a continuous search and rescue operation.
