On Thursday, February 1, 2024, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) stated that in order to fill the vacancies in the state and federal legislatures, it will hold bye-elections and rerun elections around the nation.
This was disclosed by the commission’s head, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, at a meeting with leaders of political parties to get ready for the polls.

Professor Yakubu stated that following a lengthy legal battle, the commission was mandated by the courts to hold new elections in 34 federal and state districts, comprising one Senate seat, eleven federal seats, and twenty-two state seats.
He added that in order to cover the gaps left by resignations or deaths of members, the commission will hold bye-elections.
He declared that following the meeting with party leaders, a legitimate election date and an all-inclusive schedule will be made public.
