The current governor of Bayelsa State, Douye Diri, was declared the victor of the governorship election that was held on Saturday by the Independent National Electoral Commission on Monday.
Chief Timipre Sylva, the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate, and sixteen other candidates were beaten by Diri on Saturday.

The statement was made at the Prof. Mahmood Yakubu Media Centre, INEC, Yenagoa, Bayelsa State, by Prof. Kuta Farouk, the Vice-Chancellor and State Returning Officer of the Federal University of Technology, Minna.
The current governor won in six of the state’s eight local government areas (LGAs), whereas Timipre Sylva, the All Progressives Congress’s (APC) closest competitor, only won two.
According to Prof. Farouk, Gov. Douye Diri emerged victorious in the election, garnering 175, 196 votes to beat Chief Timipre Sylva, who received 110, 108 votes.
There are 1,056,862 registered voters overall, compared to 372,000 accredited voters.
Kolokuma/Opokuma, Ogbia, Yenagoa, Sagbama, Nembe, Ekeremor, Brass, and Southern Ijaw are among the LGAs that the PDP candidate won; Chief Sylva of the APC won the LGAs of Nembe and Brass.
