The Rivers State House of Assembly, on Friday, rejected Governor Siminalayi Fubara’s proposal to implement the Rivers State House of Assembly, RSHA, Service Commission Law.

After holding an impromptu session, the House voted against Fubara for the second time, overriding his approval of bills.

In January, the House also voted against Fubara’s approval of four Bills that had been previously passed and sent to him for approval.

During the 99th legislative session at the Assembly quarters, the House made the decision to override the Governor’s approval.

A statement issued by Martins Wachukwu, the media aide to the Speaker of the State Assembly, was sent to journalists, confirming the lawmakers’ decision.

According to the statement, the lawmakers made this decision after the Governor refused to approve the four Bills, claiming that the proposed amendments would cause confusion and violate constitutional provisions.

Regarding the Rivers State House of Assembly Fund Management Bill, which was reintroduced by the Majority Leader, Major Jack, and discussed by members, the Speaker, Martin Amaewhule, referred to Section 100(5) of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999, which grants the House the authority to override the Governor’s decision when he withholds his approval.

Similarly, the Rivers State Local Government Law (Amendment) Bill, the Rivers State Traditional Rulers’ Law (Amendment) Bill, and the Rivers State Advertisement and Use of State-owned Property Prohibition (Repeal) Bill were all reintroduced, debated, and voted upon, resulting in a unanimous decision to override the Governor’s approval.
