Imran Khan, the former prime minister of Pakistan, was sentenced to three years in prison for alleged corruption.

He was found guilty of not disclosing the income he received from the sale of state goods by an Islamabad court.

The former prime minister was brought into prison from his house in Lahore, according to the counsel for the former PM, Intazar Hussain, who said the judge had ordered his immediate detention.

According to Mr. Khan’s team, he will challenge the judgement.

The 70-year-old former cricketer-turned-politician was charged with abusing his position as premier from 2018 to 2022 to purchase and resell goods that were brought back from trips abroad and were valued at more than 140 million Pakistani rupees ($635,000).

The Reuters news agency reported that Khan was not present in court for the proceeding but that his attorney said the former prime minister had been detained in Lahore.

Since he was overthrown in April of last year, more than 150 lawsuits have been filed against him. Khan has asserted that the accusations are politically motivated and has denied any misconduct.

A conviction in the case, according to legal experts, might eliminate his hopes of running in the national elections, which must be held by early November.
