Justice Hamza Muazu of the Federal Capital Territory High Court has approved the request of Godwin Emefiele, the former Governor of the Central Bank, to travel outside of the FCT.
However, the court has specified that Emefiele must remain within the country. Previously, Emefiele’s bail terms restricted him to the FCT, but he sought a variation of these terms through his lawyer, Mathew Bukka, SAN.
The Counsel of the EFCC, Rotimi Oyedepo, SAN, did not object to the request but emphasized that Emefiele must provide an undertaking to remain in the country. Additionally, the charges against Emefiele have been amended from 6 to 20, including offenses such as criminal breach of trust, forgery, conspiracy to commit forgery, procurement fraud, and conspiracy to commit felony. Emefiele was granted bail on December 24, 2023, with a sum of N300 million and two sureties in like sum. He has since been released from the Kuje Correctional Centre after his lawyers fulfilled the bail conditions.
The trial for his alleged procurement fraud has commenced before Justice Hamza Muazu.
