The EFCC has denied claims that Governor Yahaya Bello is in their custody. Get the latest on the EFCC’s clarification regarding his status.
The agency known as the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has refuted allegations of apprehending ex-Kogi State Governor Yahaya Bello.
In response to a statement released by Bello’s media team on Wednesday, September 18th that alleged the former governor had avoided court appearances in Abuja for several months and voluntarily surrendered himself to EFCC, this is an explanation.
According to reports, Bello had been called upon several times to respond to allegations connected with a money laundering case worth N80.2 billion.
Following consultations with his legal team and political associates, the former governor’s media team informed that he opted to surrender himself to the anti-graft agency.

Despite claims to the contrary, a statement released on the EFCC’s official website refuted Bello’s purported act of surrender and dismissed it as unfounded.
Media reports on Wednesday, September 18, 2024 misleadingly suggested that Yahaya Bello – a former Governor of Kogi State – was in EFCC custody under the title “Yahaya Bello not in EFCC Custody”. This statement is false.
The Commission clarifies that Bello is not in its custody and continues to remain a wanted individual with an outstanding warrant for arrest. This follows his previous declaration as wanted by the Commission on allegations of money laundering involving N80.2 billion.
Remember that after completing his second and final term as governor in January, Bello was charged with 19 counts of money laundering by the EFCC before the Federal High Court in Abuja.
According to the charges, it is claimed that as governor of Kogi state, the former governor redirected over N80 billion from the treasury of Kogi’s government.
