Alhaji Abba Kabir Yusuf of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) has been officially declared as the duly elected Governor of Kano State by the Supreme Court.
This decision comes after his victory in the 2023 Governorship Election was challenged by the All Progressives Congress (APC) and its candidate, Alhaji Nasiru Yusuf Gawuna.
The Court of Appeal had previously nullified Yusuf’s victory, but the Supreme Court overturned this decision. Justice John Okoro, who delivered the lead judgement, stated that the Court of Appeal was wrong in affirming the tribunal’s decision that Yusuf did not win the majority of lawful votes.
The apex court also addressed the issues of deducted votes and party membership, ruling in favor of Yusuf on both counts. The deducted votes were reinstated, and it was determined that the court had no jurisdiction over the issue of party membership.
The highest court later overturned the rulings of the lower courts, deeming them unjust, and reinstated Abba Yusuf’s electoral triumph.
