Robinho, a former Manchester City player, has been ordered by the Brazilian high court to serve a nine-year prison term in Brazil after being found guilty of sexual assault in Italy in 2013. Alongside five others, he was convicted of raping a woman in a Milan nightclub and received a nine-year sentence.
Despite denying any wrongdoing, Robinho has failed in two attempts to overturn his conviction through appeals.
Initially, there was a possibility that he would not face imprisonment since Brazil does not extradite its citizens and he resides there. However, the judges of Brazil’s Superior Court of Justice voted 9-2 to uphold the conviction, meaning he will now serve his sentence in his home country. Robinho still has the option to appeal the decision to Brazil’s Supreme Court.
