To lessen the effects of the elimination of fuel subsidies, President Bola Tinubu has put 107 electric and gas buses as well as taxis into service in Borno State. This is part of the government of Governor Babagana Zulum’s efforts.
On Monday, Tinubu launched the flotilla near Borno’s Palace in the Shehu.
The Nigerian leader praised Zulum for his vision at the event, calling his development efforts inventive.
“Excellent Governor Zulum… That’s precisely “Hope Renewed.” I appreciate your excellent work as always. While in Maiduguri for the 2023 Chief of Army Staff Annual Conference, Tinubu expressed gratitude for once again being inventive and creative, caring for his people, and providing good government.
We intend to leverage your proactive and strategic thinking to establish an assembly plant at the sub-national level, so contributing to economic growth and bringing prosperity to our people. Thank you so much, Zulum; you’re doing a great job,” he continued.
Abubakar Ibn Umar Garbai Al-Amin El-Kanemi, the Shehu, had previously received tribute from President Tinubu.
Zulum, for his part, said that the action was taken to lessen the effects of the elimination of gasoline subsidies and as part of his administration’s metro transport plan.
“Mr. President, Borno State decided to invest massively in a mass transit scheme after you announced the removal of subsidies and your subsequent directive to governors to provide immediate palliative care,” the governor continued.
According to Zulum, the 107 cars were adapted to run on petrol and electricity in an effort to increase the usage of inexpensive energy sources and low-cost transportation.
The buses are divided into 10 gas-powered 50-seat mass transit buses, 12 gas-powered 15-seat Hummer buses, 35 gas-powered 30-seat coaster buses, and 50 gas-powered 4-seat electric taxis.
The Borno State Government purchased 120 buses earlier this year. Seventy-seven of them were introduced in September to operate on more than 15 routes in the Jere Local Government and Maiduguri City.
