Borno: Soldiers and Civilians Missing After Boko Haram Ambushes Troops
Boko Haram terrorists ambush military troops in Borno, leaving several soldiers and civilians missing, further intensifying security challenges in the region.
A number of Nigerian military personnel are unaccounted for after being ambushed by Boko Haram terrorists in Baga, near the edges of Lake Chad.
According to armed forces personnel who communicated with our correspondent confidentially, the attack took place as soldiers were trying to retrieve the bodies of 40 residents slain by insurgents.
The operation intensified into a fierce gunfight, reportedly resulting in the deaths of several soldiers.
Our troops embarked on a mission to locate the bodies of civilians killed by terrorists. In our extensive search, we ventured too far and fell into a terrorist ambush. This operation involved both armed forces personnel and civilians working together as a team.
“There was an exchange of fire resulting in the loss of some of our soldiers. We have not yet determined the exact number because we are still recovering bodies, and some troops are returning to base. Thus, the death toll is currently unknown,” stated a military source.
A different civilian source in Baga reported that around 50 civilians went to retrieve the bodies of those who were killed yesterday, but only one person has returned so far.
According to the source, the 50 men consist of members from a civilian joint task force, local hunters, and several other young individuals.
Approximately 50 villagers gathered to retrieve the bodies of community members who had been killed by Boko Haram terrorists. Unfortunately, they were ambushed during their mission. While several people lost their lives in this attack, the exact number remains unknown as only one person has made it back to the village so far; we are still waiting for more information from others.
“I don’t have information regarding military casualties, so I can’t comment on that. However, the civilians involved include members of the civilian joint task force, hunters, and vigilantes,” said a local source.
This incident took place on Tuesday in Baga following an attack that resulted in the deaths of forty residents.
An attack in Gwoza led to the deaths of six individuals, including five reportedly repentant insurgents as well as members of a civilian joint task force and hunters.
