At least 27 fishermen were killed and three others were taken hostage by the Boko Haram terrorist group, Jamā’at Ahl as-Sunnah lid-Da’wah wa’l-Jihād, in the outskirts of Lake Chad along the Cameroon-Nigeria border. Reports indicate that militants believed to be from the Buduma faction of Abou Ummaymah launched an assault on a local fishing community, primarily consisting of Nigerian fishermen, at Island Kofiya near Darak in Cameroon.
According to intelligence sources, the attackers instructed the fishermen to lie down, bound their hands, and proceeded to carry out the killings. Additionally, four other fishermen were abducted on suspicion of espionage for the ISWAP faction.
Following a search and rescue operation conducted by troops and fellow fishermen who escaped the attack, the bodies of the victims were recovered.
