US President Joe Biden, who announced he will not run for a second term and endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris as his successor, stated that the November election would serve as “a crucial turning point” for America in his inaugural public speech.
On Wednesday evening, Biden addressed the nation from the Oval Office and declared his unwavering commitment to unify the Democratic Party while handing over leadership to a fresh generation.
Biden expressed his deep respect for the office he holds, but stated that his love for the country takes precedence. He explained that although he believes his accomplishments as president, global leadership, and plans for America’s future warrant a reelection campaign, protecting democracy must remain the top priority over personal ambition.
Biden emphasized the significance of the upcoming election, in which Harris will be vying against Donald Trump – the Republican nominee. He expressed that his decision to run for presidency four years ago was driven by a deep belief that America’s essence and character were on the line. This sentiment remains relevant today as well, according to Biden.
At first resisting, Biden yielded to influence from prominent Democrats and influential party contributors who contended that he lacks the ability to beat Trump. Anxiety about his advanced age and declining physical condition escalated swiftly following a calamitous debate with Trump on TV last month where Biden exhibited bewilderment and encountered difficulty in completing his phrases.
On Sunday, Biden made known his determination to step down from the candidacy and designated Harris as his successor. It is anticipated that during the Democratic National Convention in the subsequent month, Harris will be ratified as the official nominee.
Over the weekend, House Speaker Mike Johnson stated to reporters that since it is acknowledged by all that Joe Biden is unequipped to manage an effective campaign, Republicans are now urging him to step down from his presidency as well. He asserted,” If he can’t run a winning campaign then how could we expect him to handle leading our nation?”
