The popular reality television programme Big Brother Naija has been called for by the Benue State House of Assembly in a motion to be banned by the Nigerian Broadcasting Commission (NBC).

During a plenary session presided over by the Speaker, Hon. Hyacinth Dajoh, the decision was made.

The proposition gathered traction as a result of concerns expressed by Hon. Manger Manger, the MP for Tarka State Constituency, regarding remarks made by Venita Akpofure, a housemate on the show, towards the Tiv ethnic community.

Along with calling for the show to be banned, the House mandated that Akpofure publicly apologise to the Tiv ethnic minority through two major newspapers and television stations.

In order to prevent similar incidents in the future, they also suggested reporting her to the Inspector General of Police and filing a lawsuit in a reputable court.

Manger emphasised in his motion that every person or group deserves respect for their dignity, which is a fundamental that must be respected and protected, and he did so by citing Section 34 of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

Manger expressed worry about Venita, an Urhobo from Delta State, who had made offensive statements.

The Tiv people of Benue State, according to her claims, provide their wives as entertainment for guests and friends.

Given that she had previously been married to a Tiv man and had two children with him, Manger emphasised the significance of resolving the situation quickly to avoid confusion and misrepresentation.

By making sure that people understand and are accurate, the House hopes to limit any possible harm brought on by such utterances.
