Benjamin Kalu becomes deputy speaker of the house

Idris Wase, the Deputy Speaker of the 9th National Assembly, is replaced by Kalu, a native of Abia State.

Benjamin Kalu, a member of the House of Representatives who represents Bende Federal Constituency in Abia State, has been elected the 10th National Assembly’s Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives.

At the opening of the 10th House of Representatives on Tuesday in Abuja, the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate who had been chosen to represent the party won without opposition.

Then, on Tuesday at 12:21 PM, he was sworn in.

Idris Wase, the Deputy Speaker of the 9th National Assembly, is replaced by Kalu.

Following Tajudeen Abbas’ election as Speaker of the Green Chamber, a representative from Kaduna State’s Zaria Federal Constituency, Kalu emerged.

In a voice vote on Tuesday at the National Assembly Complex in Abuja, Abbas prevailed over Wase and Aminu Jaji.

Of the 359 votes cast, Abbas received 352 of them, while Jaji and Wase each received three.

The majority APC won more than 170 of the 360 seats in the green chamber in the recently held elections, more than any other party. The Labour Party (LP) came in second with more than 35 seats, followed by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) with over 100 seats, and the New Nigerian People’s Party (NNPP) with about 20.

There were numerous APC lawmakers who expressed interest in becoming the next Speaker of the House. There are several of them, including Wase, Jaji, Alhassan Ado-Doguwa, Yusuf Gagdi, Aliyu Betara, Abdulraheem Olawuyi, and Princess Onuoha, but all of them resigned except for Wase and Jaji.

After defeating Senator Abdul’aziz Yari, Senator Godswill Akpabio of Akwa Ibom State was chosen to lead the 10th National Assembly.

In the meantime, Kano North Senatorial District representative Senator Jibrin Barau won the position of Senate Deputy President without opposition, replacing Ovie Omo-Agege.
