Kemi Seba, a prominent Beninese activist known for his anti-French stance, has been arrested in Paris. Seba has long been a vocal critic of France’s influence in Africa, and his detention is sparking widespread reactions.
According to news reports, French police in Paris have arrested Beninese activist Kémi Séba.
Sébast was arrested on Monday while dining at a restaurant with a colleague.
He is recognized for voicing opposition to France’s significant influence over West African countries where French is widely spoken.
The reason for his trip to France remains unclear, and there hasn’t been an official statement about his arrest yet.
Advisor to the Leader of Niger
Sébastien was recently appointed as an advisor to Niger’s military leader, General Abdourahamane Tiani. The general came to power in a coup that took place in July 2023, overthrowing President Mohamed Bazoum.
Since then, Niger has severed its relationships with Western nations and requested the withdrawal of French, American, and German troops.
Sébastien used a Nigerien diplomatic passport to enter France, drawing the attention of authorities and resulting in his arrest.
Protests Against France
Sébastien “Séba” spearheads the Urgences Panafricanistes group and has organized demonstrations opposing French influence. In a striking protest, he burned a CFA franc note—used by numerous former French colonies in Africa—and denounced it as an emblem of colonialism.
He previously held French nationality but renounced his passport last year, leading to the revocation of his French citizenship.
Seba’s protests have garnered significant support, particularly among young individuals in West Africa.
