The Supreme Court is being urged by Diri, INEC, and PDP to reject Sylva’s appeal regarding the Bayelsa governorship election. Discover the reasons behind their request.

The governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress, APC in Bayelsa State gubernatorial election has filed an appeal against Governor Douye Diri’s victory. However, Governor Diri has requested that the Supreme Court reject this challenge to his election.

Diri argued vehemently before the highest court that Sylva’s appeal was irredeemably weak, with no corroborating witnesses or documents to substantiate his claim.

During Monday’s proceedings, Chris Uche, SAN represented Diri and argued that the appeal lacked merit and should be completely dismissed.

Charles Edoshomwan, representing the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), and Tayo Oyetibo, SAN, representing the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), both endorsed the proposal to reject the appeal on grounds of lack of merit.

Onyechi Ikpeazu, SAN represented Sylva and appealed to the apex court to overturn the rulings of both the Bayelsa State Governorship Election Petition and Court of Appeal that had previously rejected his petition.

The Supreme Court was petitioned by Sylva to nullify INEC’s announcement of Diri as victor in the governorship election and instead recognize him as the legitimate champion.

The panel of the apex court, with Justice Garba Lawal as its head, postponed their judgment to an undisclosed date after considering arguments presented by the involved lawyers.
