BASF Donates Mosquito Nets to Students in Jigawa

BASF combats malaria in Jigawa by donating treated mosquito nets to boarding students. Learn about this vital health initiative.

BASF, an insecticide treated net (ITNs) manufacturing company, has donated mosquito nets to the students of Science and Technical College, Hadejia in Jigawa State to help reduce malaria prevalence among boarding school students.

Dr Jean-Marc Ricca, the BASF Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Country Cluster, West Africa, emphasized that the gesture aims to protect the students from malaria while in school and to support the state government and other partners in their efforts to combat malaria in the state and the country.

The CEO highlighted the importance of the donation, especially during the rainy season when mosquitoes breed in stagnant water and grasses, leading to increased malaria cases.

He mentioned that old nets would be retrieved from the students for recycling, contributing to a cleaner environment.

Dr Jean-Marc Ricca also mentioned that the initiative would provide students with an opportunity to learn about recycling and its benefits for a healthier environment, emphasizing the importance of sustainable practices in combating malaria.

The Director of Nature Conservation, Ministry of Environment, Mr Ibrahim Lawan, praised BASF for their efforts in retrieving old nets for recycling, noting that non-degradable nets pose environmental challenges and that the ‘End of Life’ component of the ITNs distribution program is a step towards a cleaner and healthier environment in the state.
