A fresh wave of banditry hits Taraba State, leaving one farmer dead and six individuals abducted. Tensions escalate as residents demand urgent action.
A tragic incident occurred in Garbatau, a farming community in the Bali Local Government Area of Taraba State, where bandits killed a prominent farmer named Alhaji Mai Wanda Maibultu and abducted six other individuals over the weekend.
Maibultu, an extensive-scale farmer, was assaulted on his farm, while the other victims were abducted from the village situated in a mountainous region near Garba Chede town.
Local residents report that the bandits are demanding a ₦100 million ransom for the release of the kidnapped farmers.
Adamu Dauda, who lives in the nearby town of Maihula, revealed that this isn’t the first time an incident like this has occurred in the area. He recalled a similar attack last year when hundreds of bandits stormed the community, abducting several farmers and interrupting their farming operations.
“This time, the farmers were busy harvesting their crops when the kidnappers disrupted them once more,” Dauda lamented, expressing frustration over the repeated attacks.
The incident has reignited worries about ongoing instability in the region, which still threatens farmers’ livelihoods and disrupts the state’s food supply chain.
