Multiple American troops sustained minor injuries and a member of the Iraqi security forces was severely wounded in an assault on a military base in western Iraq utilized by US-led coalition forces, according to officials.
An Iraqi police official revealed that over a dozen explosive projectiles were launched at the Ain al-Asad airbase from within the Anbar province. Although air-defense systems managed to destroy 13 of the rockets, two of them hit the base.
Preliminary investigations suggest that the base may have been targeted by ballistic missiles, but further assessments are ongoing to determine the exact nature of the attack.
Damage assessment is currently being conducted by coalition and Iraqi forces, and tensions in the Middle East have been escalating since the Israel-Hamas war.
The US has faced numerous attacks in Iraq and Syria, predominantly utilizing rockets and one-way attack drones. In response to attacks on vessels in the Red Sea by the Iran-backed militant group, US and UK forces have recently targeted Houthi targets in Yemen.
Presently, the US has approximately 2,500 troops stationed in Iraq and 900 in Syria as part of Washington’s military presence.
