Atiku and Sani urge lawmakers to cut their salaries and allowances amid economic challenges. Find out more about their call for action.
According to Shehu Sani, a former Senator of Kaduna Central, the actual culprit responsible for financial mismanagement is the operational expenses of the House of Representatives and not their salaries.
While praising the House of Representatives for reducing their salaries, Sani commented.
Sani posted on X, praising the Reps for their symbolic gesture of slashing salaries. However, he pointed out that the real issue to tackle is not salary but rather office running costs which remain a pressing concern.
Likewise, Atiku Abubakar, the presidential candidate for the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in 2023 compared the sacrifice made by lawmakers to a minor contribution.
According to Atiku, the lawmakers’ allowances contain demons rather than their salaries.
On X, he wrote: “Although the sacrifice made by members of the House of Representatives is admirable, it pales in comparison to the magnitude of corruption present. It’s not their salaries but rather their allowances that are plagued with demons among lawmakers and government officials.”
The implementation of the Oronsaye Report, which was widely publicized, seems to have fallen by the wayside. Lately there has been an increase in the number of MDAs with significant cost implications.
The current issue is the excessive amount of unnecessary spending and neglect towards essential expenses. A comprehensive reduction in expenditures must be implemented to address this concern, as borrowing money for irresponsible governance has become unaffordable.
