When running for president on behalf of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Atiku Abubakar, a former vice president, pledged to privatize oil refineries.
Tuesday, Mr Abubakar stated in a tweet that his administration will aim to make Nigeria the centre of the continent’s crude oil refining.
Mr Abubakar declared, “I’m going to privatize our crude oil refineries and turn Nigeria into the centre of crude oil refining in Africa.”
The candidate for president has long advocated for the privatization of refineries, state-owned oil firm, and other sectors of the economy.
To enhance the oil business, he said in August that the NNPC should be privatized. He also added that it is not the government’s job to oversee the oil and gas sector.
The candidate for the main opposition party also declared that, if elected in 2023, he would put into practice the Oronsanye report’s suggestions to cut back on government expenditure to deal with the country’s current economic issues.
“Our baby is the Oronsaye report, which focuses on reducing the cost of governance in the face of deteriorating economic conditions.
We’ll finish the job if you choose us, he tweeted.
In an 800-page study submitted in 2012, the Oronsaye committee recommended the merger and dissolution of 102 parastatals and government organizations, some of which were self-funding.
The committee discovered fierce rivalry between several, overlapping government bodies, which caused resentment amongst agencies and unnecessary spending of public dollars.
