One death and more than 100 injuries were reported following an attack on the convoy of the Peoples Democratic Party’s (PDP) presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, according to Mohammed Jajari, the party’s governorship candidate in Borno State.

Atiku was attending a rally in Maiduguri, the state capital, on Wednesday when the incident occurred.
According to Jajari, who appeared on Channels Television’s Sunrise Daily on Friday, the casualties were sent for treatment right away to the state General Hospital and the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital.

“They had established what we refer to as Civilian JTF during the whole trip from the airport to the Shehu’s residence (Joint Taskforce).
From the airport to the Shehu’s palace, they mobilized them across the street while taking off their uniforms and putting down their names, according to the gubernatorial candidate.

“There were so many sticks and stones.
Even at the rally’s location, there were so many patients and injured individuals that we had to transport them to the hospital.
At least 150 people were hurt, and last night, around 9 o’clock, one of the victims passed away.

“The rally’s location was quiet. All of our fans were OK when we arrived. The rally we held was peaceful. But as the presidential candidate headed to the airport, the same individuals were on the same roadway.

While the Borno State Commissioner of Police did visit the rally location on Wednesday, according to Jajari, “he wasn’t there when we were holding the rally.”

Before the event, the gubernatorial candidate said that purported threats against the PDP made by opposition members had been submitted to federal security agencies. He claimed that, despite his ignorance of any security agency action, Atiku’s security personnel had “arrested few” of the suspects.

The state police (command) arrived and inquired. However, they insisted that the suspects must accompany them. Although I’m not sure if they did, Jajari confirmed that several of them had in fact been detained by the candidate and his security team.

“We have sent written appeals to the IGP’s office, the DSS’ office, the NSA’s office, and to each of them with copies to the (PDP) state chapter as well. That was completed last week, well before the rally. To the best of my knowledge, however, nothing was done.
