The Rivers State campaign headquarters of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) presidential candidate Atiku Abubakar have been closed down.
The action, according to the Rivers State PDP presidential campaign council, was taken on the state government’s instructions.
The office, which is located in GRA Port Harcourt, was closed early Friday morning.
Rivers State’s Governor Nyesom Wike recently signed Executive Order 22, which says that political parties can’t set up campaign offices in residential areas without permission from the government.
The PDP PCC in Rivers State, however, said that its media team had requested permission from the state government but had not heard back for several weeks.
So, the group criticized the law because it “stamps on our fundamental right to free expression of opinion.”
Additionally, it stated that this despicable action by the Rivers State Government “tends to militarize our democracy and renders our dear state politically recessive when pitted with other states in the country” when viewed through the political lens.
