The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has announced an indefinite strike, disrupting academic activities nationwide over unresolved disputes with the government.

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) at Sa’adu Zungur University (SAZU), Bauchi, a Nigerian institution, has declared an indefinite strike due to unresolved demands for improved working conditions from the university’s management.

Speaking to journalists after an emergency meeting at Yuli Campus in Bauchi, Awwal Nuhu, the Chairperson of ASUU’s SAZU branch, announced that all attempts at negotiation had been pursued but yielded no positive response from the authorities.

Nuhu stated that the congress recognized it had used all possible mechanisms and found every effort to engage authorities regarding its demands fruitless.

Nuhu explained that a union member proposed a motion for the branch to initiate an all-encompassing and indefinite strike action, which was supported by another member.

He stated that the congress approved a resolution for the strike to commence at 12:00 p.m. on Friday, November 29, 2024. He highlighted that all ASUU members at SAZU are required to adhere to this directive, with all academic activities halted indefinitely.

He stated, “Members are instructed to begin a complete, all-encompassing strike action with no set end date. This means that activities like teaching, grading, meetings, accreditation processes—alongside any other duties associated with academic staff—are suspended indefinitely.”

According to PlatinumPost, the strike seeks to pressure university management and relevant authorities into addressing the union’s demands, which have remained unresolved despite numerous attempts.
