Ofem Obeten (DSP rtd), the national legal adviser of the Association of Police Retirees under the Contributory Pension Scheme, and retired superintendent of police Iwara Ibiang Enang have urged Nigeria’s various security agencies to detain and question Asari Dokubo, a leader of the Niger Delta militant group, for allegedly making repeated incitement statements.
In Calabar, Cross River State, Let’s Talk Nigeria is a popular morning conversation program on Sparkling FM Radio. Both people that attended were guests.
The retired security personnel urged the federal government to summon Dokubo to order immediately, look into his allegations that senior military figures, particularly in the navy, are involved in bunkering and oil thefts, and that his ‘army’ is in charge of protecting some areas of the nation instead of the Nigerian Army.
They also referred to the viral video on social media in which he is depicted holding weapons while insulting the Igbo as slaves and downplaying Nigeria’s security capabilities.
His public words have been provocative. These remarks are ludicrously offensive and have the potential to engender discontent and ire among the general populace.
“Security agencies must take very immediate action in response to Dokubo’s hurtful statements and parade of weapons,” SP Enang said. “This must serve as a deterrent to others and ensure that other young men do not believe they can act similarly and get away with it.”
Obeten urged that a probe into Dokubo’s alleged slur on the Igbo people in the viral video on social media be conducted.
He argued that it was important to deal with the state’s impunity for such acts against it, thus he stated the militant leader’s claims and statements should not be dismissed.
Callers on the phone-in program denounced the militant leader’s claims about running the nation’s security networks as well as the impunity with which he disparaged the Igbos.
