After Manchester City beat Liverpool in the last 16 of the Carabao Cup on Thursday night, Micah Richards and Jamie Carragher both praised a young player named Rico Lewis.
Erling Haaland, Riyad Mahrez, and Nathan Ake each scored three goals as Manchester City upset Liverpool 3-2 at the Etihad Stadium behind a strong performance by Lee Lewis.
Mohamed Salah and Fabio Carvalho both scored goals for Jurgen Klopp’s team.
“He [Lewis] was outstanding, the positions he was picking up, the way he pressed high and was getting on the ball, you know [Manchester] City like to have a third center half then roam in midfield,” Richards said after the game in a Sky Sports interview.
“I think his decision-making about when to go and when to drop off was excellent.”
“I watched him play against Sevilla in the [UEFA] Champions League. He’s going to be a celebrity for someone so young—a local kid going through the academy.
As for Carragher, Richard’s colleague analyst stated, “For a manager to put a rookie defender in, they will make mistakes at times, but you want them to be able to handle physically.”
“As a young player, he’ll gain maturity and experience, but he showed he could physically compete with men’s football.”
