As an appeals court judge, I have never influenced my wife’s decisions, Bulkachuwa.
The Court of Appeal’s President from 2014 to 2020 was Justice Zainab Bulkachuwa.
Accusations that Senator Adamu Bulkachuwa interfered with his wife’s position as President of the Court of Appeal have been refuted by the former senator who represented Bauchi North in the 9th Senate.
The Court of Appeal’s President from 2014 to 2020 was Justice Zainab Bulkachuwa.
“I look at faces in this chamber whom have come to me and sought my help when my wife was the President of the Court of Appeal,” Bulkachuwa remarked in a speech to the 9th Senate, which was presided over by Ahmad Lawan, on Saturday.
When he acknowledged using his position to ask for favors on behalf of friends while she was the President of Nigeria’s court of appeal, Senator Bulkachuwa received criticism.
However, the former senator claimed in a BBC Hausa interview that Senate President Ahmad Lawan prevented him from finishing his sentence.
I just started by saying thank you to her, but I wasn’t even allowed to finish. She put up with me even though I work in politics and she in law.
She was naturally helpful, so I asked her for the favors I needed. Every employee, whether a lawyer, engineer, or doctor, can provide support in their work, but I didn’t even go into detail about what kind of assistance I meant. According to him, offering assistance is not illegal or wrong in any way.
The accusations made against Bulkachuwa of meddling with his wife’s employment, in his opinion, are unfounded.
He continued, “Given how we lived, I never gave her advice on how to handle her cases or run her office. Even at home, we never discuss such topics.
The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) has meantime urged the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) Chairman and Inspector General of Police (IGP) to urgently summon Senator Bulkachuwa for questioning and move further with his prosecution.
In a statement released on Wednesday, NBA President Yakubu Maikyau noted that the senator’s comments in the widely shared video clip were unmistakably admissions that he had attempted to pervert the course of justice or had actually interfered with the proper administration of justice. As a result, even with this admission, the senator could still face an investigation and prosecution.
The group added that it would be an understatement to say that this had a significant detrimental effect on the judiciary’s independence and integrity.
