Arsenal secures the signing of Riccardo Calafiori. Learn about his background and what he brings to the club.
We have signed Italy’s Riccardo Calafiori from Bologna, a Serie A team, on a steady agreement.
Having exhibited remarkable performances at the core of Bologna’s defence, a 22-year-old defender earned selection to Azzurri squad in Euro 2024.
Riccardo’s career began at Roma’s youth academy, where he honed his skills for 12 years before rising to the first-team. While there, he ventured on loan to fellow Italian club Genoa in the 2021/22 term and gained valuable experience.
The young defender, who had played for his national team at all age levels, transferred to Swiss club Basel in August 2022. He performed consistently and featured in 26 league matches that season before making a move back home the following year.
The commanding center-back signed with Bologna in August of 2023 thanks to his outstanding displays on the field.

During the previous season, Riccardo distinguished himself as a key member of their defensive line and established himself as one of Serie A’s most dependable players. Not only did his commanding displays catch the attention of those selecting national team members for Euros contention but he was also awarded May 2024’s Serie A Player of The Month accolade.
