Arsenal ensured their position at the top of the Premier League standings on Christmas Day with a thrilling 1-1 draw against title rivals Liverpool at Anfield.

The Gunners took an early lead through Gabriel Magalhaes, but Mohamed Salah equalized for Liverpool before halftime.

Both teams displayed their strength and emerged as strong contenders for the title, making the draw a fair result.

Arsenal, aiming for their first title since 2004, are now one point ahead of second-placed Liverpool heading into the festive period. Historically, the team leading the league at Christmas has often gone on to win the title, but the draw against Liverpool also provided hope for the chasing pack.

Aston Villa, in third place, are level on points with Liverpool, while Tottenham, in fourth, are three points behind.

Defending champions Manchester City are six points behind Arsenal with a game in hand. Despite Liverpool’s unbeaten record against Arsenal at Anfield, this result was another frustrating one for Jurgen Klopp’s team, following their goalless draw against Manchester United the previous week. Arsenal, too, were not entirely satisfied with the outcome.

Last season, they had a 2-0 lead against Liverpool but ended up drawing 2-2, which marked the beginning of their downfall in the title race. While this result should not have had such a detrimental impact, it was still a missed opportunity for both teams. Klopp had called on Liverpool fans to create the “proper Anfield experience” for Arsenal, expressing his dissatisfaction with the atmosphere during their League Cup victory over West Ham.

He even suggested that fans who were not in the right mindset should give their tickets to someone else. Arteta, on the other hand, was well aware of the intense atmosphere that awaited his team at Anfield, comparing it to being tossed around in a washing machine.

In response to Klopp’s remarks, the Liverpool supporters passionately chanted their iconic anthem, ‘You’ll never walk alone’, before the match began. However, Arsenal quickly demonstrated their composure by launching a swift attack within the first 30 seconds. The move resulted in Gabriel Jesus’s shot narrowly deflecting over the Liverpool defense.

This early warning did not deter Arsenal, as they took the lead just four minutes later. Martin Odegaard delivered a flawless free-kick into the Liverpool area, and Gabriel rose to powerfully head the ball past Alisson Becker from eight yards. In celebration, the Brazilian defender cupped his hands to his ears in front of the Kop.

Anfield was left stunned by the turn of events, but the atmosphere remained far from silent. Falling behind was not unfamiliar territory for Liverpool, as they had trailed in eight other Premier League games this season, losing only one of them.

Liverpool’s hopes of a penalty were controversially denied by VAR when Odegaard handled the ball in the area after slipping under pressure from Salah. However, Salah took matters into his own hands to ensure that Liverpool did not regret this debatable decision. In the 29th minute, the Egyptian conjured a magnificent equalizer, receiving Trent Alexander-Arnold’s precise long pass on the right flank. Salah effortlessly glided past Oleksandr Zinchenko into the area before unleashing a powerful strike that beat David Raya at his near post.

The first half concluded with moments of excitement, as Arteta held his head in frustration when Gabriel Martinelli’s shot missed the target, and Saka failed to convert a promising opportunity.

After the break, Klopp’s team gained momentum, with Joe Gomez narrowly missing the target with a powerful shot, and Harvey Elliott’s long-range strike deflecting onto the post. Liverpool should have taken the lead in the 73rd minute when a counter-attack from an Arsenal corner saw Salah set up Alexander-Arnold. However, the ball took an unfortunate bounce, causing Alexander-Arnold’s shot to rebound off the crossbar with only Raya to beat.

As the relentless Red Wave continued to surge towards the Kop, Gomez’s effort forced a good save from Raya, but Arsenal managed to hold on.
