Arrest made after inspector shoots Kano residents
The inspector who killed a citizen during a brawl between some competing gangs in the state is to be arrested, according to Mohammed Usaini Gumel, the commissioner of police for Kano State.
When the police were called to stop a violent outburst in the Kurna Asabe neighbourhood of the Fagge Local Government Area in Kano State on Wednesday, at least two locals were shot.
Resentful locals stopped the heavily travelled Kurna, Rijiyar Lemo to Mile “Tara” road after a gang fight that claimed a life.
Since it provides the sole means of access and departure for numerous towns, the road is among the busiest in the state.
Additionally, the route links to Jigawa State’s Kazaure and Roni Local Government Areas as well as the exit into Katsina State.
The police commissioner confirmed the death and stated that his personnel were called in to report fighting between two opposing gangs in Kurnan Asabe.
Gumel reported that one person had died before the cops could bring things back to normal.
The commissioner asked everyone to maintain their composure and carry on with their lawful businesses, knowing that security agencies would take care of the protection of people and their property.
He claimed that when the inspector pulled the trigger, he did not receive any orders from the current chain of command. As a result, he fired a shot that tragically injured two people, one of whom passed away while receiving medical attention at the hospital.
The CP instructed the Area Commander, Dala, ACP Nuhu Mohammed Digi, in a statement signed by the Public Relations Officer, SP Abdulahi Haruna Kiyawa, to find the negligent Police Inspector in order to form a board of inquiry into the incident’s cause, the results of which will be made public.
“The Police Inspector was arrested a few hours later and is currently being held by the Police.”
“It is quite unfortunate that the Police Inspector took this step. This is due to the fact that the Police have never engaged in combat with members of the public, much less opened fire, since taking office as the CP. It is well known that the Police Command is totally dedicated to upholding everyone’s freedom and rights. Since the scenario is highly unusual in comparison to the friendly relationship that now exists between the Police and the Public, the Command is urging the public to rest comfortable that justice will be done in handling it.
“The Commissioner of Police, in expressing his condolences to the family of the deceased and offering prayers for the departed soul, has asked the public to remain composed. The Command is treating the incident seriously and is dedicated to preserving the values of justice and openness,” the Kiyawa statement states.
