The Arewa Think Tank (ATTK) has expressed its support for President Bola Tinubu’s efforts to ensure that local governments have financial autonomy for the development of grassroots communities.
President Tinubu has criticized the excessive influence of governors on local governments.
According to a statement by Muhammad Yakubu, the Chief Convener of ATTK, the lack of accountability and effectiveness hinders the growth of local councils, and therefore governors should be held responsible for the lack of development at the grassroots level.
ATTK aligns itself with President Tinubu’s stance, as he highlights the need for governors to view local governments as more than just a means to secure votes.
We believe that President Tinubu is making commendable efforts to enhance the country’s revenue base, and therefore governors should show sympathy and consider the needs of the people.
Communities are where people reside, work, farm, and live their lives. It is crucial for local governments to effectively deliver services to these communities.
We currently have 774 local governments, but are they truly effective? Do they address the problems faced by Nigerians? Do they coordinate development with state and federal governments?
We must find answers to these questions in order to promote the development of our grassroots communities.
