Solomon Arase, a former inspector general of police, has received congratulations from the Arewa Youth Group for Peace and Security on his selection to lead the Police Service Commission.
The group’s national chairman, Alhaji Salihu Magaji, declared in a statement that Arase’s appointment was a positive development.

“This is a positive move by President Buhari, and we have no doubt that his appointment would give the required leadership that will not only reposition the police force to provide the best security for Nigerians but also polish its image.”
President Buhari requested that Arase’s appointment be confirmed by the Senate in accordance with the 1999 constitution.
Arase, an Edo State native, left his position as head of the Nigerian Police in 2014, a year after Mr. Buhari took office.
Former President Goodluck Jonathan named him IGP.
Arase will succeed Musiliu Smith, another former IGP who left his position last year amid controversy.
Prior to being named IGP, Mr. Arase oversaw the Criminal Intelligence and Investigation Bureau, the Nigerian Police’s primary intelligence gathering division.
He was born in Edo State in 1956 and attended Ahmadu Bello University, where he earned a degree in political science in 1980. On December 1st, 1981, he was hired by the Nigerian Police. A year later,
Arase worked in a variety of positions, including those of Assistant Inspector General of Police in the intelligence gathering unit and Commissioner of Police in Akwa Ibom State. He served in Namibia as part of the UN peacekeeping mission and is a fellow of the Nigerian Defense Academy.
