Alphabet, the parent company of Google, Meta, and Apple, is currently under scrutiny for potential violations of the Digital Markets Act (DMA) that was implemented in 2022.
If these companies are found guilty of violating the regulations, they could potentially face substantial fines amounting to as much as 10% of their annual revenue.
The announcement of these investigations was made by EU antitrust chief Margrethe Vestager and industry leader Thierry Breton on Monday, marking a significant development in the ongoing efforts to ensure fair competition within the tech industry.
This move by the EU follows a recent decision to fine Apple €1.8 billion for infringing competition laws related to music streaming, indicating a strong stance against any practices that may hinder fair market competition.
