The Appeal Court has discharged ex-Chief Justice Onnoghen, dismissing his previous conviction on false asset declaration accusations.
The Court of Appeal in Abuja has overturned the conviction for false asset declaration previously handed down by the Code of Conduct Tribunal to former Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Walter Samuel Nkanu Onnoghen, effectively clearing him of all charges.
The conviction of Onnoghen, issued by the Umar Yakubu Danladi tribunal on April 18, 2019, was overturned by the Appellate Court after resolving the issues that had led to his trial and conviction.
In a judgment reflecting the settlement terms agreed upon by the federal government and Onnoghen, Justice Abba Bello Mohammed ordered that the four bank accounts previously slated for forfeiture be returned to him.
In a short statement, Onnoghen’s lawyers, Adegboyega Awomolo and Ogwu James Onoja—both Senior Advocates of Nigeria (SAN)—expressed their gratitude to President Tinubu and the Attorney General of the Federation for facilitating the resolution of the matter.
